Open spaces

Oi boi… one of my groups is very active today… and i mean really very active. Ever since i rushed to my computer this morning, its been going on and on. Line after line.. so what the hell is going on? Oh my.. what’s the big deal? Well.. Linden Lab is. This was posted on the blog:

To recap:

  • Openspace prices and fees change on the 1st January with no grandfathering.
  • Class 4 Openspaces will be upgraded to class 5 in January.
  • Educator discount is no longer available for Openspaces.
  • No Owner switching for Openspaces unless it’s a full transfer of Payor.
  • More proactive education by support staff to prevent unfair resource use by Openspace regions.

If you are new and you don’t know what its all about, well its about raising tier prices (the payment you do to LL for your virtual land is called tier). LL reduced the island prices earlier this year. You can buy a so called full sim, but for the same amount of money you can buy 4 open space sims (OS). BTW you have to own a full island to be able to purchase OS sims. The big difference between the 2 types of sims is the prim count and the performance, they share CPU resources. OS sims are created for light use, they dont support much prims (3750, a full island is 15000). They should be used for environments like water or beaches, surrounding your full sims. Due to price reduction and double prim holds for OS sims, it became a great investment. You pay 250 USD to purchase an OS and 75 USD for tier, a full sims costs 1000 USD to purchase and 295 USD tier. So you see its very attractive to purchase OS sims and rent them out or use them for business.

A lot of people bought OS sims. LindenLab says ‘So Openspaces have been incredibly popular as a perk for estate owners, but sadly there is a twist. Unfortunately most of the Openspaces are being used for much more than light use.  Based on analysis performed in August and September, Openspaces are being used about twice as much as we expected, in other words being loaded with double the content/avatar load than we’d expect for a region that is supposed to be light use.’

We all invest in Second life, whether its time, money, or both, we are all part of it. To increase the tier price means higher tier prices for renters,  that will lead to less land renters. Less renters means less income to cover the tier and leads to an increase of people who are going to sell their sims. Linden Lab was able to decrease the prims, or lower max number of avatars a OS can hold. Even could do both. They choose this, i have doubts about this decision and favour the other options. Here are some of the group reactions…. (anonymous off course).

If they preemptively covered themselves then they had a strategy to fleece landowners… I didn’t like the competition.  However, I sucked it up.  And now that the tables are turned, I don’t mind saying that I actually like and appreciate the increase in cost for the OS……. Well anyone who builds a business on the broken backs of competitors rather than on their own creativity and effort is just a big fat smacktard.

I am still angry at the OS owners that came to my sims and enticed residents I had with large parcels to move to their OS’s didnt think the residents told me , huh ? well they did, and it was wrong to come to my sim and tell them they should move to your OS , you can give them more land at the same price

Just got here… are ya’ll tired from yappin all night :) …….. what’s wrong with it is that it’s bait and switch.  it’s immoral and in many countries illegal…… i’m expecting to see a lot of open space sims for sale if they don’t give the option to convert for free…….

We all have to wait and see what happens at the 1st of January. To be continued.
