Reduce lag

Tips & Tricks Residents November 5th, 2009

How to experience less lag in Second Life!

When you visit an island like Java Island, you will experience lag. Why?
1. Many (moving) people (avatars cause lag)
2. Scripted items (like the beds)

But it can also be
3. your bandwith
4. your preferences (settings of your SL viewer)

If it is your viewer or bandwith, you are experiencing lag and your friends are not, or not so much.

++ What to do? ++

In order to reduce as less lag as you can you can set your preferences in your viewer. How?

 ctrl + P or
 File – Preferences

** If you are not watching streaming video in Second Life DISABLE STREAMING VIDEO.

** If you are the host of an event, monitor the ARC (Avatar Rendering Cost) of your attendees. The rendering cost of an Avatar  can heavily strain the performance of a region. More info on ARC:  http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Avatar_Rendering_Cost

++ HOW TO REDUCE AVATAR RENDERING ++

Uncheck; AVATAR CLOTH – SL cloth does not move naturall, and rarely do people wear loss fitting clothing! Avatar cloth simply makes things like pantlegs on mesh parts of the avatar flow in the wind.

CHECK AVATAR IMPOSTERS so that Avatars that are further away do not try to fully render themselves.

LOWER YOUR DRAW DISTANCE so that your graphics card isn’t processing things like complex builds and Avatars on the other side of the region you’re in.

INCREASE CACHE SIZE so that you provide more room for SL to “see” the textures of the world. Have a small chache means it will only keep so much information before it bogs down.

LIGHTING DETAIL:
Put a dot in: SUN AND MOON ONLY

TERRAIN DETAIL:
Put a dot in: TERRAIN DETAIL: LOW

SHADERS
Uncheck: Water Reflections
Uncheck:  Atomospheric Shaders

DRAW DISTANCE: Draw distance is how far away (in Meters) your graphics card processes data – set this slider to lower.

MAX. PARTICLE COUNT:  Objects and environments that make intese usage of Particles can cause significant lag in a region. To limit the amount of particles your Avatar sees, adjust the slider to a lower level.

MESH DETAIL:
Most of these you can set to a level that is comfortable to you. To reduce renderng of default Linden Trees and landscaping, reduce the slider on TREES: to low.

TERRAIN is the ground texture you see, some people use very high resolution terrain files. If you don’t need to see he ground in pristine detail, set TERRAIN: to low

Running SECOND LIFE IN A WINDOW also reduced performance. Setting Second life to run FULL SCREEN or reducing the resolution increases performance.

All finished now! Try the tips and see how it works for you. I can asure you it does wonders!
